How the profit and tax are calculated
Monthly profit = amount Γ yearly rate Γ· 12
Profit after tax = profit Γ (1 β 15%, 30% or 5%)
- 15% / 30%: profit on National Savings for individuals falls under the βother profit on debtβ rate of Section 7B (Division IIIA of the First Schedule), doubled for people not on the Active Taxpayers List.
- 5% cap: for Behbood Savings Certificates, the Pensioners' Benefit Account and the Shuhada Family Welfare Account, the law caps tax at 5% of the profit.
- Final tax: for yearly profit up to Rs 5 million the deduction settles your tax on it. Above that, the profit is taxed with your other income.
- No compounding: certificates pay profit out rather than adding it to the principal, so the calculator uses simple profit.
Compare a bank savings account or term deposit with the bank profit calculator β banks deduct 20% from filers and 40% from non-filers, so at the same headline rate National Savings keeps more of your profit. Not on the ATL? Read how to become a filer, and check what you owe on your savings with the Zakat calculator.
